Positive & Negative Square Compositions

Using the principles of design, like Repetition, Proximity, Weight, Gravity, Balance, Scale etc., create four designs exploring each of the words below (four designs per concept, 16 compositions in all):

Emphasis
Movement
Rhythm [a sense of motion with a deliberate pattern]
Proportion

Design Problem:
considering the above, create an interesting and dynamic composition that use black construction paper to fill 50% negative space. Cut the paper into 4x1 strips. You can not cut your strips more than 12 times (parts should show the original dimensions).

Your areas should 4x4, be 4-up [four to a page], above center, and equally spaced to specifications below. Paper should be glued onto bristol neatly. I don't want to see pencil or pen lines. No boarders. Only black paper.
Since your bristol is 14 by 17. I want these portrait, vertical, not landscape, or horizontal. The four comps, 4x4 inches each, are two inches apart. borders are 2 inches on the sides and 4 at the top and 5 at the bottom.

Use the sketching process!

I will be grading you for success of composition in relation to each theme, clean product, and use of design principles.
Are you solutions thought through and worked out, or are they still unresolved?

Physical Texture Collage (your first project!)

Using found textures, create a balanced composition that explores texture. Try combining different textures. Start by imaging some ideas and even sketching thumbnails of possible comps. Then place your textures together and move them around. Then glue down your final comp! Bring your stuff to next class we. Use the all purpose glue and your bristol board.

1. must use more than 3, no more than 10 textures.
2. must use only found textures, glue, on your bristol paper

DUE TUESDAY OCT 12th

schedule:
Tuesday: sketch possible comps with hatching and or dots in thumbnail form in you sketchbooks
Thursday: have your materials and start laying them on your composition area without gluing
Weekend: over the weekend finalize your comps.

This will hang on the wall. Bring your tacks! Your piece shouldn't be too heavy and all the materials should be well attached.

You will be graded on how successful your comp shows the principles of design at work, contrast, balance, grouping, rhythm etc. How well you explored Texture. The "clean-ness" of your final product (you didn't turn in a piece of ripped up paper etc.)
